Location
Kathmandu is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Nepal stands at an elevation of 1,400 m above the sea level. It also contain two sister cities namely Patan and Lalitpur and is surrounded by four major mountains of the region namely Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun and Chandragiri. It is one of the most important business and commercial cities of Nepal situated at the confluence of Bhagmati and Vishnumati rivers. It is a fascinating city with great shopping opportunities and various religious shrines.
Sight Seeing
Kathmandu Durbar square: Located in the heart of Kathmandu the place is famous for several ancient temples built between 13th to 17th centuries. The important temples and monuments that one can see over here include the courtyard of the living goddess Kumari, the Taleju temple, the Shiva Parvati temple, Maiju Deval, and the Bhairaba statue. The old palace there served as Royal palace for Nepalese kings for several centuries. On the western corner of the complex is a temple named Kastamandap, made with a single tree, the name Kathmandu is said to be derived from this very temple.
Swoyambhunath (The Monkey temple): Two km west of the city centre lies the 2000Just 2 Km west of the city of Kathmandu lies the 2000 years old Buddhist stupa of Swoyambhunath, perched on a hillock. It offers a sweeping view of the Kathmandu valley and is a profound spiritual centre for Buddhists Tour. As there are lots of monkeys on the woods in this hill, this temple is often called "monkey temple" by the tourists. Late afternoon one can see several lamas worshipping and rolling the prayer wheels which are something amazing. Buddhists visit the stupa on the Buddhist festivals like Buddha Purnima and Tibetan Losar or the New Year.
The Pashupatinath Temple: The Pashupatinath Temple is situated at a distance of 5 Km east of Kathmandu on the banks of River. It is one of the most venerated Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva is famous for its superb architecture. With a tiered golden roof and silver doors the large glided triple- roofed temple was built in 1696 AD. The entrance to the temple precinct is forbidden to non Hindus.
Patan: Patan also known as Lalitpur is the city which is famous for fine arts. This Buddhist city was founded by the great emperor Ashoka in the 3rd centaury BC. The city is a great center for both the Newari Buddhists religion and of traditional arts and crafts with 136 courtyards and 55 major temples. Some of the renowned temples of Patan are Krishna Mandir, Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, Kumbheshwar temple, Jagatnarayan temple & the Mahabouddha temple.
Bhaktapur: Situated at a distance if 14 Km east of Kathmandu Bhaktapur is a complete medieval city and is a must visit destination of a tour to Kathmandu. The city of farmers the Bhaktapur is also famous for pottery and weaving which still retains its medieval aroma. The other major attractions of Bhaktapur include 5 storied Nyatapole Temple, Bell of the barking dogs, Dattatrya Temple, Pujari Math etc.
Changunarayan temple: Just 18 km east of Kathmandu is situated the Changunarayan Temple which is the oldest temple in Kathmandu dated back to 467 AD. The lavishly decorated two tired temple was again rebuilt after a fire in 1702. The temple has priceless stone sculptors and writings on the copper plates and stone slabs from 4th to 9th centaury AD the period belongs to Licchavi Kings. It is now a world heritage site declared by UNESCO.
Gorakhnath Caves: The other major tourist attraction of Kathmandu is Gorakhnath Caves. The place is named after saintly Gorakhnath which believed to have meditated in these caves. He left his footprints on the rock in front of the cave.Many temples and monasteries are established around the region. Among them the most famous is Tibetan Gompa that belongs to Nyingmpa Sect to honor Guru Rinpoche who had introduced Buddhism in Tibet.
