Location
Ooty,the 'Queen of Hill Stations',is
located at an altitude of 2,240 m
in the Western Ghats. Udhagamandalam
is the headquarters of the Nilgiris
district of Tamil Nadu.
Sight Seeing
The Government Botanical Garden is
2 km from Ooty. Marquis of Tweedale,the
then Governor of Madras laid down
the garden in 1847. A fossil tree
trunk almost 20 million year old is
preserved in the 20-acre park. At
a distance of 1 km is the artificial
lake built in 1824 by Mr. John Sullivan,the
then Collector of Coimbatore. Doddabetta
is the highest peak of the Nigiris
with the elevation of 2,623 m. It
is 10 km from the main town. Mukkurthi
Peak and National Park is 40 km from
Ooty and located on the Nilgiri Plateau.
The park is famous for the population
of the Nilgiri Thars. Mudumalai Wildlife
Sanctuary is spread over 321 sq km
with an elevation of 1,140 m. The
park has the population of Panther,Sambar,Spotted
Deer,Barking Deer,Wild Boar,Porcupine,Minivets,Hornbills,Fairy
Blue Birds and Jungle Fowls. Pykara
is 21 km from Ooty is famous for Pykara
Dam,Pykara Falls and the reservoir.
