There is a variety of cuisines taken by the various ethnic groups of Sikkim. Rice is the staple food. Alcholic drinks are quite popular among men and women. Beef eating is common amongst the Bhutias. Meat and dairy products are also consumed. Momos is very popular among the people of Sikkim.
This Tibetan delicacy is stuffed with meat, vegetable or cheese in flour dough and is steamed in three tier utensil for about half an hour. It is mainly consumed with various sauces. It is quite popular among youngsters as it oil free. Thupka is a noodle soup with vegetables and is readily available in most of the local restaurants. Seal Roti is also very popular. It is eaten with potato curry and is mainly a party dish. Niguru is basically the household dish and is not available in restaurants. Gundruk are the leaves of mustard oil plant that have been allowed to decay for sometime and then are cooked with onions and tomatoes and thus form this tasty dish.Chhurpi is a fermented dairy product prepared from cow milk. It is a traditional cottage cheese. Chaang is the local beer made by fermenting millet using yeast. It is very strong an intoxicating and is the favorite dish of many Sikkimese.
