Uttar Pradesh is an agriculturally dominant state of Northern India. Rice, wheat, maize, pearl millet, potato, sugarcane, vegetables, sorghum, mustard, pigeon pea, chickpea, pea, lentil and fruits are principal crops grown in Uttar Pradesh. Offered more than 17.6 million hectares of gross cropped area, of which 72 per cent is irrigated with a cropping intensity of 152 per cent, Uttar Pradesh is successfully attracting visitors from several parts of India.
Alluvial and salinesodic are the two major soils of the state (with some problems of salty waters) in Gangetic plains and residual soils in Bundel Khand. Farmers in Uttar Pradesh are continuously supplying generalized quantities of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and to some extent zinc (Zn), and as a upshot, deficiencies of potassium (K) and thus to come up with the best products. Several other nutrients are spreading in space and time. Total area under food grains is 78 per cent of net cropped area.
