Sprawling across the total area of 51,125 Km the Uttarakhand is located on the southern slope of the Himalayan ranges. The state is surrounded by Himachal Pradesh in the northwest and Uttar Pradesh in the south. It shares international border with Nepal and china. The climate and vegetation vary greatly with the elevation to the tropical forests. The state has two distinct climatic regions one is dominated by hilly terrains and the other is the smaller plain region. Situated at the height of 7,917 m above the sea level, Nanda Devi in the district of Chamoli is the highest point in the state.
The climatic conditions of the plains are very much similar to its counter part in the Gangetic plains. Being in the Himalayan regions the state has Alpine conditions characterized by cold winters with snowfalls for quite a long time , good rainfalls in monsoon and summers with mild temperatures. The state of Uttarakhand is rich in natural resources varying from snow capped mountains to cliffs to crests. The state is mainly dominated by mountains, glaciers, forests grassy meadows, rivers, perennial lakes that have contributed majorly to make the state a perfect tourist destination in India. With several major rivers Ganga and Yamuna are originating from here. A major part of the state comes under the rainforests that make the state a home to various endangered species. It has some of the best known wild life sanctuaries and animal reserves among them the Jim Corbett National Park, Rajaji National Park, Nanda Devi National Park, Gangotri National Park and Valley of Flowers are of International Repute. Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Nilgiri, Shivling , Kedarnath are some of the prominent peaks of Uttaranchal. Ganga, Kosi, Mandakini, Yamuna, Alakananda are the major rivers that flows through the state. Sunderdhunga, Kaphini, Maiktoli , Nanda Devi are some of the prominent glaciers of the region. All this natural abundance make the state a worth visiting destination to visit in holidays.
